The Gross Anatomical Studies on the Major Salivary Gland in the Korean Native Goat

Abstract
The morphological findings of the parotid, mandibular and sublingual salivary glands of the Korean native goat have been investigated by gross anatomical observations. The observation was made by dissection of twenty Korean native goats with embalming fluid.
1. The parotid gland was triangular in shape and its size was 62.8§® long, 32.2§® wide and 18.8§® thick. The mandibular gland was oval shape: and the size was 50.3§® fang, 24.5§® wide and 10.7§® thick. The sublingual gland was divided into monostomatic and polystomatic glands. The sizes were 42.3§® long. 10.9§® wide and 2.0§® thick in monostamatic gland, and 46.5§® long, 10.1§® wide and 1.7§® thick in polystomatic gland.
2. The parotid duct followed the caudal, ventral and rostral borders of the masseter muscle and opened in the huccal vestibule opposite the faurth premolar tooth. The mandibular duct accompanied the major sublingual duct and opened on the sublingual caruncle with or adjacent to major sublingual duct.
3. Branches of the external carotid, superficial temporal and maxillary arteries supply the parotid gland. The mandibular gland was supplied by the cranial thyroid and the cranial laryngeal arteries from the common carotid artery, and by the lingual artery and masseteric branch which are branches of the external carotid artery. The sublingual gland was supplied by sublingual artery, branches of external caratid artery.
4. The parotid gland was innervated by the buccal and auricular temporal nerves of mandibular nerve and by the caudal auricular, dorsal buccal and ventral buccal nerves arised from the facial nerve. The greater auricular nerve, branch of the second cervical nerve also innervate the gland. The mandibular gland was innervated¢¥ by branches of the mandibular and glossopharyngeal nerves, and the sublingual gland was innervated by the sublingual nerve, branch of mandibular nerve.
